Smythe Cashing in at Tres Palmas

The caption says that this lone rider is Dennis Rich, but I heard Smythe was on a secret tow-in mission at Tres Palmas last week...I think this is really the Smythe. This is a big fucking wave.

Indo Physical Training Work Up

There was big debate today at lunch today about the pre-indo training that is going down.

I shared my plan with Bill and Tom who have plans of there own and I was curious what the rest of you are doing? Please comment below about your plans.

My plan was devised to be effective but also easy to stick to.

My plan is: For the last 90 days prior to our trip I will do one of the following things everyday
  1. Surf
  2. Run 1 or mores miles
  3. Go to the Gym
I have no diet plan, or drinking rules because I want to keep it simple. (I start this plan in 8 days from today)

  • I heard Chris' plan was to bring goggles for everyone else because he thinks all his spray will hurt our eyes.
  • Shea's plan is to cut off Chris on the wave of the day everyday (Shea practiced this morning) and to do his taxes soon to pay for the trip.
  • Josh's plan is to over hype the surf or a particular surf break location in order to trick everyone into going there (he also was practicing today)
What is your Plan?

Barry White Attacks the O.C.

Spring has sprung and so too have Southern California shark incidents. At least two separate shark encounters, one of them rather bizarre, have occurred in the last month according to internet website SharkResearchCommittee.com. Both of the incidents involve Great White Sharks, and in one of the incidents the shark measured 15-feet long.

"I was waiting for a set for about five minutes when I felt a jolt down on the tail of my board, immediately followed by violent bubble cascade, which sunk the board down about another eight inches."

This incident took place at Huntington Beach on March 7, 2008, according to the Shark Research Committee website. It was on this date that Thomas Larkin was surfing near Huntington Cliffs and reported his shark encounter as follows:

"I was waiting for a set for about five minutes when I felt a jolt down on the tail of my board, immediately followed by violent bubble cascade, which sunk the board down about another eight inches. I didn’t really get what was going on as quickly as I should have, but as soon as it begun it had ended and I was apparently alone again. A wave popped up, I paddled into it but pearled because of the water in the nose of my board, I quickly got back on and paddled into the whitewater of the next wave and boogie boarded it to the beach where I emptied the board through the apparent bite mark."

According to the Shark Research Committee website, the diameter of the bite on Larkin's board suggests it came from an adult Great White Shark in excess of 15 feet in length.

Two days prior to Larkin's encounter in Huntington beach, on March 5, 2008, a bizarre scene unfolded in front of Kelly Lewis as she walked her dog near trail One at San Onofre State beach. According the Shark Research website, Lewis watched a 6-foot long male Great White thrashing about in the shore break, at one point completely dry docked on a sand bar and on its back. The shark had a bloody residue dripping from its body, according to Lewis’ account on the Shark Research Committee website. Eventually the shark made its way back into the water and disappeared.
Great White Shark sightings at San Onofre are nothing new. A few summers ago, two Great Whites were spotted by State lifeguards and onlookers near Trail One. In fact, their appearance became such a regular occurrence that local workers planned their lunch breaks around the two sharks.

Whether or not we should be alarmed is up for debate. Northern Californian surfers deal with the Great White Shark reality on a daily basis. Now, it appears, we will have to do the same. Or somebody should call Chief Brody!

Snapple Antioxidant Water Sponsors The Donkey's

Hi everyone, I wanted to let you know that Snapple found the donkey site, read about us, and contacted me to show us some support. They sent us a few cases of their new Snapple Antioxidant Water for our upcoming Donkey Surf Contest which will be held prior to our trip to Indonesia in July. I have to say this stuff is really good.

They shipped the goods to my office in Encinitas, so if you want to stop by and pick some up feel free, or they will be available at the contest which I expect to be sometime in early June.

Snapple loves Donkey's and thus Donkey's love Snapple

Visit Puerto Rico?

Oh boy...Puerto Rico is due for a massive swell. It is supposed to start filling in today and hit 30-40 ft by tomorrow. A little big to do top turns, but the fading swell over the next week should be pretty epic. Who wants to COME ON DOWN!

"S" Day is Determined - Surfer's Ear

Similar to the invasion on Normandy in 1944 , an all out assault (surgery) will take place in my right ear canal on Wednesday, May 15th 2008 at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla by esteemed board certified E.N.T surgeon Dr. Andrew Beros.

As you may know I have a condition called Exostosis of the ear which is otherwise know as "surfers ear". This is very different, but often confused with "swimmer's ear", which is a simple bullshit ear infection.

Surfer's ear, is a bone that grows in your ear canal to protect your eardrum from harsh elements like cold water & wind and eventually closes off your eardrum completely. Technically speaking, the condition can occur over time in any climate where the water temp is below body temperature; however, the development of the bony growth is accelerated by colder water and winds.

Most people born and raised in California only have issues with their right ear since that ear faces North, into the predominant winter winds out of the North West. I on the other hand, was raised on the East Coast where the predominant winter wind is from the North East. After close to 8 years out West, I am fortunate enough to have problems with both of my ears.

To be specific, surfer's ear surgery is recommended after your ear canal is more than 80% closed and my left (east coast) ear is at 90% and my right (west coast) ear vacillates between 98-100% closed. I need surgery in both ears, but much like the dentist (that I really hate to go see) they will only work on one side at a time because if they fuck up, they don't want me to be completely deaf.

There are a few different way to preform the surgery and there is allot of debate within the medical community as to which procedural method is superior. Researching my options I was eager to find the method with "the shortest recovery time" but after allot of reading it looked as if the method with a longer recovery time was better as the surgeon had better access to the problem areas and could address them more thoroughly.

The long recovery way to do the surgery is to cut behind the ear and flip the ear forward (think cutting open an envelope). Once opened using this method, the surgeon has better access to DRILL and he/she can see the landmarks in the ear so they don't fuck up and make you deaf.

The NEW School method is to go through the ear without cutting open the back and to use a MIRO-CHISEL to jackhammer out the bone. The downside is they can't see the Landmarks as well and can't remove as much bone as a result.

The ultra modern way is to use a laser to zap it out, but this ain't o.k.'d by the FDA and therefor is not covered by my insurance.

My doc has done over 1000 of these surgeries successfully, and being a primo surgeon on the west coast, deals with this type of problem regularly. He does a hybrid of the first two methods and will will be launching this "shock and awe" campaign on my ear. Basically, he goes through my ear, uses the micro-chisel to jackhammer the bone out, then breaks out the handy drill to "round off the rough edges". He said that the old school way is for surgeons that don't do the surgery allot and that since he does them so often he has become very comfortable with the new school method.

It is a real deal surgery, I get to wear a gown, an anesthesiologist puts me to sleep, then I wake up soar, in-pain and confused (sounds like one of smythes dates, I know). For the first week or so I will not be able to hear out of that ear at all. Worst of all, he says I will not be able to surf for about 3 weeks and as long as I am not a jackass and take care of myself well, probably sooner.

More to come later... Conner
