Double Overhead | Smythes Dream

The forecasters were saying that the swell wasn't supposed to start filling in until later in the morning. They were wrong.

I surfed at 7:00am this morning, negative .2 low tide, 3-5 mph offshores and solid 10 foot faces. Easily double-overhead on the sets. Thick lips. Spitting Barrels.

Rincon Forecast for Shea's Visit

I am working around the house and decided to sit down and check the surf forecast. I was hoping the swell would start hitting tonight so I could bold out of here and try my new AJW fish, but according to this surf report...I'll have to wait a week or two for that small a board.

Shea is coming down on Sunday. Check out the forecast bitches!

Smyth Surfs Better Than You

I wanted to give everyone an update on my surf sessions this past weekend with "The Smyth".
If you have not surfed with him lately, you are in for a shocker!!! Chris is ripping!

Massive gouges, multiple and relentless hits off the top, rooftop floaters with airdrop re-entry, "The Smyth" has it all in the bag of tricks now. As I type, he is surfing Oceanside with Stefan and probably adding another move I never thought he was capable of into his repertoire.

GEOFF - Smyth could steamroll you now..

Shit, I couldn't beat him in a heat because he catches all the waves!

On top of all this ripping, Chris is training hard for Indo Hitting the gym 3-4 and sometimes five times a week.

Smyth has also be negotiating with Kandui Resort about adjusting the wave priority system.

The new priority system is as follows:
  1. The Smyth always has priority
  2. When in doubt refer to rule #1

Is anyone going to setup and take out the Smyth? Who's going to be #1 at the end of the Indo trip? Who's going to catch the most waves? Who's going to seek the deepest pits? Who will be in the best shape? Only time will tell, but if I bet in vegas right now, I would bet on The Smyth.

Hotels Kuala Lumpur / Padang - Talk with Kandui Update

Hi all,

Here are the hotels that we are staying at while in KUL and PDG: They look Safe and Luxurious

Kuala Lumpur : Renaissance Kuala Lumpur (Marriott)
We will be staying here on on the night of the 5th and possibly the 6th as well. We may move to a hotel closer to the airport for the night of the sixth since this hotel is 45min away from the terminal and we have a early flight on the morning of the 7th. The cost of this hotel is $100 per night with taxes per room and if we choose to we can sleep 4 of us per room so $25 each. Chris and I have booked two rooms at this rate, so if any of you want your own room or don't want to share a bed then let us know and we can let you know where to make your reservation.

Padang : The Ambacang Hotel
We will be staying here on both sides of our trip to and from the island so on the nights of the 7th and the 19th we will be sleeping here. Kandui Resort has been kind enough to book this hotel for us at their discounted rate of $50 per night. In this case I requested 4 rooms, since each room is set up with two beds. This will give everyone their own bed and space on the nights that we will need it most. We will also want to take advantage of the air conditioning as well.

Updates on My talk with Kandui

Photos: We have a surf guide that is specifically assigned to our group. The surf guide will be meeting with us every night and discussing our game plan for the next day with us and will help determine where we surf based off of forecasted conditions. The group has the option of sticking together or splitting up based off of what type of waves we fell like surfing or what sleep schedule we may be on. The surf guide is there to take pictures of us out on location and will be happy to use our cameras or the resort's. The resort has a nice digital slr for this very purpose. It was encouraged for us to "tip" the surf guide extra for his photo taking... That being said though, Kandui and the remaining Donkey's would really love for Marc Kozai to stop being a pussy and come along with us...

Crowds: I had a very candid conversation with Anthony M. of Kandui regarding the crowds or lack there of at the breaks. After much of what I had been reading I expected for some of our sessions to be in somewhat crowded conditions. The long and short of the conversation is that in worst case conditions (small swell, bad North winds, limited surf break options) including our group of 8 we might see a crowd of ten others in the line up, so a total of 18ish. This as Anthony put it would be a rare scenario for the swell rich time of year we are going there.. In most cases we will find the breaks uncrowded or empty, and if it does get congested we can always hop in the boat and move over to another spot. He more or less guaranteed that "we should easily catch 500-600 waves per person during our stay". Sounds good to me..

I Changed My Seat to: 60c

I called Malaysia Air back today to see when I needed to call to request exit row.

When they pulled up my seats she said I was currently seated (39H) in a "utility area" where they put children.. and per the agent.. "you don't want to sit next to a crying baby for a 20 hour flight".. "Why did the agent put you in these seats? The seats in the back are way better they are just like the business class seats"...

She moved me to 60C...

The seats that out group wants on our flight is:
Row 60: Seat A, C and D
Row 61: Seat A, C and D
Row 62: Seat A, C and D

In rows 60,61 and 62 seat A, C are side by side A is window and C is aisle, Seat D is Aisle across from C.

You can see the Malaysia Air 747-400 seating chart to understand this...

The SEAT GURU is a pretty cool site too...

Indo Flights and Travel Details :)

Here is the basic itinerary for the Indo trip.

!!BE SURE TO Check out the NEW KANDUI VIDEO!!
  • July 4th - 1:40 am depart from lax via Malaysia Airlines flight 95 to KUL kuala lumpur(need to be at the airport 3hrs ahead of time)
  • July 5th - Arrive in Kuala Lumpur @ 12:15pm , proceed to hotel downtown. Chris stayed here last summer and it was awesome. Check out some pics of KUL
  • July 6th - Go to water park and potentially rent out the sunway lagoon wave pool @ $300/hr, Move to a hotel next to the airport. Goal is to get acclimated to climate and time change, have fun...
  • July 7th - Depart KUL for Padang @ 7:50am on Air Asia flight 942, arrive PDG at 8am (1hr time change), then stay on hotel in Padang for 1 night. Per kandui recommendations the evening of the 7th is the latest anyone should arrive to Padang.
  • July 8th - fly out to island and start surfing
  • July 19th - Leave Kandui Resort and fly back to PDG, we will be in PDG by 12 noon. Spend the night in PDG.
  • July 20th - Depart PDG on Air Asia flight 943 @ 8:30am arriving in KUL @ 10:40am, switch terminals and depart on Malaysia air flight 94 to LAX at 3:15 pm.
  • July 20th - 6:30pm arrive at lax

There are two flights that you need to pay for: the flight from lax is booked and I have already sent you your reservation locator number. Call Malaysia air @ 800-552-9264 to pay your fare and to pick your seat. Your reservation is being held for 1 week. I am in seat 39H on the flight out and back.

The second flight is with Air Asia and you can book your flight online with the information provided above, and or call me with any questions you may have.

If you are trying to get airline miles or use airline miles Bill Ivers said that you can book the same flight through Delta for the same price. Delta books the flight through china air (one of their partners) but it is operated by Malaysia airlines.

I paid: 1584.70 RT through Malaysia air, and $78 RT for the flight with air asia.

If you choose to not join the group in Kuala Lumpur, then the latest you should arrive to Padang regardless of how you get there is the evening of July 7th.

There are basically 3 ways to get to Padang:

  • Lax to singapore, Singapore to Padang
  • Lax to singapore, singapore to jakarta, jakarta to padang
  • Lax to Kuala Lumpur, KL to PDG

If you want to be hard headed and shop yourself to death on flights as Chris and I already did for you , then I recommend SideStep and Vayama travel sites to find your flight. Just remember that the shorter the flight time the better, and the fewer connections and different airlines that you use the less likely your surfboards will get lost or fucked up.

Our flight to KUL is a direct flight but it does stop in Taipei to get gas. That means me and my bags don't change planes. We are flying on a 747-400 which is one of the largest commercial airliners in the world. Then the flight from KUL to PDG on air asia is a short 1 hour flight. Air Asia is malaysia's equivalent to southwest airlines and has been in operation since 1986, All of air asias fleet of planes are air bus', which is what southwest uses, except all of air asia's planes are model year 2000 and newer.

Call me if you have any questions or concerns... Conner
